Shoreline Project

Restoring our Shores

Shoreline Restoration

Over the last nine years, we’ve observed significant shoreline erosion around our pond, with 2-3 feet of land lost to the water. Recognizing the importance of protecting and preserving this vital area, we launched a multi-phase restoration project. Thanks to the support of WAMSCO, Lakescape Solutions, WI DNR, Shawano County Land Conservation, and an amazing team of volunteers, we’ve made incredible progress.

Phase 1: Fall 2023

Our efforts began on the Lake House side of the pond, where we planted native flowering plants with deep roots to halt further erosion and restore shoreline stability.

Phase 2: Fall 2024

Building on our success, we focused on sites 1-5. Here’s what we’ve accomplished so far:

  • 428 Bio Bags Installed: These durable, 80-100 lb. bags, filled with a mix of sand and soil, were strategically placed to stabilize the shoreline and prevent erosion.

  • 1,100 Native Plants Planted: We planted 13 species of deep-rooted flowering plants to anchor the soil, reduce sediment runoff, and support pollinators like bees and butterflies.

What’s Next

To protect this new growth, we’re installing fencing around each site while ensuring campers still have access to the pond. Over the coming years, the native plants will grow through the bio bags, forming a strong, natural barrier. Once fully established, the plants will completely cover the bio bags, blending seamlessly into the landscape.

But our restoration efforts don’t stop there! Here’s what’s planned for the next phases:

  • Rainwater Diversion System: A new system will redirect rainwater runoff into a beautiful flowering rain garden, preventing gravel from washing into the river and reducing sediment pollution.

  • Additional Bio Bags: We will install more bio bags behind the Lake House to further stabilize the shoreline in that area.

  • Environmental Geo Grid Mats: High-traffic areas leading to the pond will be reinforced with geo grid mats to reduce erosion and provide stable access.

  • Fish Sticks: These structures will be added to create habitats for fish, enhancing the pond’s aquatic ecosystem and promoting biodiversity.

These enhancements are vital steps in our ongoing commitment to restoring and preserving the natural beauty and ecological health of Tilleda Falls Campground. Together with our dedicated partners and volunteers, we’re building a sustainable future for our shoreline, wildlife, and campers.
